SCHENECTADY, NY - The Union College Dutchwomen skated to a 2-2 tie with RPI on Friday night in the first of two in a home-and-home weekend series.
Jessica Kaminsky and
Alex Tancrell-Fontaine scored for Union.
Shenae Lundberg made 24 saves in the tie, giving her 803 on the season, a new career-high. She had 787 saves a year ago during her junior campaign. She now sits 5th all-time in most saves in a single season in program history with a chance to pass Michelle Tardif (4th, 813) and Kate Gallagher (3rd, 817) on Saturday. Lundy Day holds the school record with 1,181 saves during the 2008-09 season. The Dutchwomen broke through first at the 9:12 mark in the opening period. Tancrell-Fontaine's shot from the top of the slot sailed wide but
Christine Valente was there to corral the loose puck. Valente shuffled the puck to
Kathryn Tomaselli who was right in front of the net but she could not gather it as she was drapped with an Engineer defender. However, the puck bounced off Tomaselli's skate and went right to Kaminsky who deposited it into the net for her third goal of the season.
23 seconds into the second period, Alex Gruschow of RPI made it 1-1. Laura Horwood dished it to Gruschow from behind the net and Gruschow beat Lundberg 1-on-1 to even the score.
Later in the second, Tancrell-Fontaine gave the Garnet and White a 2-1 advantage with her fourth powerplay goal of the season.
Kathryn Davis sent along the pass to Tancrell-Fontaine at the top of the left circle. The senior one-timed it on net. Her initial shot was kicked saved by RPI netminder Kelly O'Brien but Tancrell-Fontaine's shot had enough mustard on it as it continued into the net after it hit O'Brien's leg pad to put Union in front.
RPI tied it at two goals a piece in the third period on the goal from Horwood. Shayna Tomilson sent a pass to Horwood who was outside the crease and fired it point blank for the Engineers.
The Dutchwomen had two solid scoring chances to try and break the tie in the final couple minutes of regulation. Tancrell-Fontaine almost connected for her second goal of the game with two minutes left but her shot was stopped by the butt of O'Brien's stick and ricocheted off to the side. With under a minute to play,
Hannah Erickson coasted down the left side of the ice and got off a great looking shot but O'Brien made an even better glove save to keep the score at 2-2.
In the extra session, neither team had much of a scoring chance as both defenses stood tall and both squads could just tally three shots on net in the final five minutes.
Union and RPI will conclude their season series tomorrow afternoon at Houston Field House in Troy, NY. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 4:00pm.
