Dutchwomen pull out 10-9 league lacrosse win at RPI

Box Score

TROY, NY --
Freshman Emily McGrail scored four goals, including the final two of the game, and the Union College women's lacrosse team handed Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) its first loss of the season, 10-9, in a Liberty League matchup at Renwyck Field.

The Engineers fall to 10-1 overall and 4-1 in the league, while the Dutchwomen, who got three goals from freshman Haley Gould, improve to 3-5 and 3-1.

Union opened an 8-4 lead midway through the second half before Rensselaer charged back to tack the lead, 9-8. McGrail tallied the next two goals, including the eventual game-winner with 2:34 left in the second half. RPI had opportunities to tie the game but freshman goalie Kim Grinhaus made a save with 1:17 left and a free position shot by Rensselaer junior captain Shannon Maguire with six seconds left sailed wide.

The game opened with the Engineers taking a quick lead when freshman Jamie Wakefield scored 52 seconds into the game. She followed with her second of the game for a 2-0 edge before Union's Gould made it 2-1. RPI's Marissa Page  got the goal back, but the Dutchwomen scored the next three goals for a 4-3 halftime advantage. McGrail and Gould had one each and Hilary Salander also scored.

Union scored four of the first five goals of the second half, by four different players, and held a four-goal lead, 8-4, with 15:37 left in the second half. RPI battled back, striking quickly to score the next five for a 9-8 advantage. Sophomore Meg Colitzhad back-to-back goals at 11:40 and 11:14, respectively, to start the comeback and Maguire put the Engineers ahead with an unassisted goal at 4:46, which came just nine seconds after she assisted on Liz Powell's tying goal.

Union won the ensuing draw control and eventually McGrail converted a free position opportunity to tie the score, 9-9, at the 3:44 mark. Following another draw control victory by the Dutchwomen, McGrail scored again 1:10 later and the Dutchwomen held off the Engineers.

Grinhaus finished with six saves for the victory, while junior Allie Arnal stopped five shots for RPI.

Union plays at league foe Skidmore on Saturday at 2 p.m.
