Daniel Ciampini and
Shayne Gostisbehere both scored and sophomore goaltender
Troy Grosenick made 18 saves to help lead No. 8/8 Union men's hockey (18-6-7, 12-3-4 ECAC Hockey) to a 3-0 win over Princeton (7-13-6, 5-11-3 ECAC Hockey) in front of 2,042 fans at Messa Rink.
With the win, Union assured itself of a first round bye in the ECAC Hockey Tournament for the third consecutive year, and ran its unbeaten streak to six games (5-0-1).
Sophomore forward
Josh Jooris added an empty net goal late in the third period to help seal the win for the Dutchmen. Grosenick earned his fifth shutout of the season, matching a school single-season record set by Kris Mayotte '06 during the 2005-06 season.
Union outshot Princeton 60-18 for the contest, setting a new school single-game record in ECAC Hockey play for shots on goal.
After a scoreless first period, Ciampini got the Dutchmen on the scoreboard early in the second period. Senior defenseman
Nolan Julseth-White pinched in deep with the puck and fired a shot on net that Princeton's Mike Condon (57 saves) kicked away. Sophomore forward
Kevin Sullivan corralled the rebound and fed Ciampini in the slot, who beat Condon over the shoulder for his second goal of the season at 1:53 to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead.
Union carried the play in the second period, outshooting the Tigers 24-2 in the frame, but Condon made several impressive saves to
keep Princeton in the game. Condon's best stop of the period came at 7:41, when he dove to keep a
Greg Coburn shot from crossing the goal line.
Early in the third period, the Dutchmen would extend their lead to 2-0 on a soft wrist shot by Gostisebehere from the side boards. Senior forward
Kelly Zajac fed Gostisbehere along the wall, who fired a shot through traffic that beat Condon between the pads at 2:48. The goal was Gostisbehere's fourth of the year. Zajac picked up his 30
th assist of the season on the play, establishing a new school single season record in the Division I era.
The Dutchmen would have a four minute power play after Princeton's Andrew Ammon was called for tripping and roughing at 4:39. But Union failed to convert on both chances with the man advantage and went 0-for-7 on the power play on the night.
Princeton went on a late power play when Coburn was whistled for boarding at 16:02, and pulled Condon for the extra attacker. Union killed of the penalty, holding Princeton scoreless in two power play chances on the night. Shortly after Coburn returned, sophomore defenseman
Mat Bodie fed Jooris, who found the empty net as he gained the offensive zone at 18:36 of the third period.
Union outshout Princeton 18-8 in the opening frame and generated the best scoring chance of the frame when junior forward
Wayne Simpson fired a 2-on-1 wrist shot into the glove of Condon midway through the period.
The Dutchmen will take on Quinnipiac tomorrow night at Messa Rink on Senior Night in a game that begins at 7:00 p.m.
