Purpose
The purpose of the Athletic Hall of Fame is to honor former student-athletes, coaches, administrators and alumna/alumnus for outstanding contributions to Union College Athletics while contributing to the welfare of the college community, the Department and their profession, reflecting the philosophy of the college and the ideals of sportsmanship.

Eligibility
1. An alumna/alumnus who participated in varsity athletics while pursuing a degree from Union College and who has completed his or her college athletic career no less than ten (10) years prior to the year of induction, and has distinguished themselves as a student-athlete.
2. An alumna/alumnus (non student-athlete) whose distinguished contributions to Union College Athletics have made a profound impact to the Department, and its student-athletes. This individual should have a five-year waiting period from graduation prior to the year of induction.
3. A non-alumni coach, athletic administrator, or college administrator whose distinguished record or profound contributions to Union College Athletics shall be eligible five (5) years after the date of his/her employment has ended at the college.
Process
Election to the Union College Athletics Hall of Fame should take place each academic year with the induction taking place on a date deemed appropriate by the Advisory Committee. The nominations and selections shall take place between April 1 and February 1. Nominations submitted after February 1 will be considered for the following year's induction, beginning April 1. Announcement of the honorees shall be made by June 1 of each year.
Nominations
Nominations shall be sought by alumni solicitation from Union Athletics coaches, announcement in the Friends of Union Newsletter, on the Union College Athletics Website, www.unionathletics.com ("Inside Athletics"..."Hall of Fame" sidebar), and by personal contact from all College constituencies. Nomination forms must be submitted for qualified nominees to be considered. (The official nomination ballots are above). Self-nominations shall not be accepted. Individuals nominating candidates are asked to include as much information as possible in regards to the candidate, including newspaper clippings, statistics (if applicable), letters of recommendation, and other highlights and honors regarding the candidate to assist the Advisory Committee in their selection. Department coaches are instructed to contact alumni from their specific sport for candidates, as well as solicit letters of support and career highlight information.
Selection Committee
The Selection Committee shall consist of the following members:
- Director of Athletics
- One (1) member of the Athletic Department Senior Staff
- Sports Information Director
- Athletic Administrative Coordinator
- Director of Alumni Relations or assistant from that department
- Vice President for College Relations or assistant from that department
ROTATING MEMBERS
- Four (4) alumnus/alumna. Three (3) year term.
- Two (2) members of the coaching staff, one from men’s sports and one from women’s sports, appointed by the Director of Athletics. Four (4) year term.
- Two (2) members at large.
No appointment shall be made to the Committee without approval of the Committee sitting at the time of the appointment. The Director of Sports Information serves as the chairperson of the group and the Administrative Assistant serves as the secretary.
Selection Process
Annual selection meetings of the Union College Athletic Hall of Fame Advisory Committee are held during the following timeline:
February (discussion of all new individuals and teams submitted, and review of previous candidates)
March (distribution of voting results, discussion, and selection of that year's Class)
The Sports Information Director will provide packets of information and ballots on all candidates for each meeting, and results of voting for the second and final meeting. Each committee member is required to attend the February and March meetings, and if they cannot attend the March meeting, they will be provided with a packet to review. At least five (5) candidates and no more than six (6) individual candidates shall be elected by a majority vote of the committee members attending. One (1) Team of Distinction shall be elected, with consideration for an additional team should it be from the Heritage Era (50 years or more prior to the induction date). Special attention shall be given to balancing the eras represented, as well as to the variety of divisions and sports represented. A deceased alumnus, coach, or administrator may be elected to the Hall of Fame, and his or her survivor or representative shall be eligible to accept the award. Determination to induct an All-American or Special Award Winner shall be left to the Committee, including the timing of such honor.
Candidates who do not receive a vote for three consecutive years will be removed from the active candidate packet. They will be placed on file and will return to active consideration should additional information be received.
Beginning in 2007, a "Team of Distinction" may be inducted for the "Team of Distinction Wing," for teams that achieved special recogntion to the College. Consideration for "Teams of Distinction" shall include outstanding season records, regular season league championships and post-season participation, with extra consideration for NCAA playoff participation. No more than one "Team of Distinction" may be inducted into the Wing each year. A team becomes eligible for consideration for this honor 10 years after the completion of that team's season.
Any new member mentioned or introduced in the March meeting will be elgible for the following year's March packet and voting.
Notification
The Director of Athletics shall notify the inductees of their selection by letter within ten (10) days of the annual selection meeting.
Information on Inductee
Once the candidate is notified of his/her selection, the individual is asked to provide as much information as possible on their Union College athletic career, to assist the Sports Information Director in publicity and biographical stories on the individual. The individual who nominated the "Team of Distinction" will be asked to provide additional materials for the team that is inducted.
