SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union men's lacrosse head coach
Paul Wehrum announced that senior goalie
Sean Aaron, senior defenseman
Matt Livingston, senior attack
Ted McKenna, senior midfielder
Jon Stidd, and senior defenseman Bob Sullivan will serve as captains during the upcoming 2011-12 season.
Both Aaron and Stidd are returning captains, while Livingston, McKenna and Sullivan were elected this season by teammates and coaches to join the two returners.
“I wanted to wait until after the selection process was finished for this year's team, and I announced the captains to the team before the beginning of our scrimmage at Middlebury,” Wehrum said. “Every one of our seniors is a leader, but these five exemplify Union lacrosse.”
Aaron, a two-time USILA All-American, is coming off another solid season in net for the Dutchmen. The 2011 Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year and a Liberty League first team honoree, Aaron played his best in league games, leading the conference in goals-against average (7.12) and save percentage (.623) in six league contests.
Livingston started in all 18 contests for the Dutchmen and had 41 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers as a key member of Union's defense, helping Union finish the regular season second in the Liberty League with a 6.62 goals-against average.
McKenna, who led Union in goal scoring in 2011 with 31 goals, really came on towards the end of the season. He scored five goals in two games in the Liberty League Tournament, helping Union earn its first league title, and added seven more goals in two NCAA Tournament contests against Nazareth and Tufts.
Stidd, a captain in both football and lacrosse at Union, saw action in all 18 games for the Dutchmen last season, recording 22 ground balls and six caused turnovers as a defensive midfielder.
Sullivan, a three year starter at defense for the Dutchmen, earned Liberty League Honorable Mention in 2011. He started in all 18 contests for Union last season and helped the team hold opponents under 10 goals in all but two contests.
Union, ranked 14th in the USILA Division III Coaches Preseason Poll, will open the season at No. 3 Cortland on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
