NEW YORK, NY – On Sunday, the Union College men's ice hockey team traveled to Lasker Rink in New York City to host a clinic with Ice Hockey In Harlem on Sunday. Union players skated with children in the Ice Hockey In Harlem program, running skill sessions before a scrimmage at the end of the day.
“We are honored and excited to partner with Ice Hockey In Harlem for this event,” Union head coach
Rick Bennett said. “It's great that our student-athletes had the opportunity to share their love of hockey with the kids in the Ice Hockey In Harlem program. What better place to hold the event than outdoors in Central Park at Lasker Rink.”
Longtime Ice Hockey in Harlem volunteer Dave Paglia introduced the opportunity to bring the Union College team to Harlem to Union alumnus and Garnet Blades member Matt Cohen '98. Cohen approached Coach Bennett at a Garnet Blades event over the summer and both agreed to pursue the event in the winter.
The mission of Ice Hockey In Harlem is to improve the social and academic well-being of children from the Harlem community. IHIH offers programming that allows children in the community to take advantage of the educational and athletic opportunities provided by youth sports. Through participation in ice hockey, IHIH student-athletes learn the fundamentals of the game, engage in an active lifestyle and broaden their life experiences.
