SCHENECTADY, NY -- Four players scored in double figures, led by
Rusmir Dzanko's 18 points, as the Union College men's basketball team defeated Roger Williams, 70-63 in the second game of the 27th Annual Sig Makofski Invitational Tournament at the Viniar Athletic Center Monday night. Union, winners of six straight, improved to 6-1 while the Hawks fell to 4-4.
Union will face former Liberty League rival Hamilton in the Championship Game Tuesday night at 8 p.m., while Roger Williams will face Wells in the 6 p.m. Consolation Game. Earlier in the evening, Hamilton downed Wells, 69-52.
Keven Donohue scored 14 points with a game high eight rebounds for the Dutchmen, and
Joe Mason added 12 points with six boards and four assists and
Keith Callies had 10 points with six rebounds. Union shot 47% and had just six turnovers on the night. Union had a 33-32 rebounding advantage.
Mike Igoe paced the Hawks with 17 points and a game high eight boards, and Joseph Henry had seven rebounds along with his 12 points. Matt Clifford scored 10 points for Roger Williams, which shot 42% for the contest.
The Dutchmen had a 41-32 lead at halftime, a half that featured just two turnovers and 52% shooting. Union was up by 11 at 58-47 when Dzanko made a layup with 9:34 left in the second half. But the Hawks went on a 16-8 run to pull to within three, as Mike Engemann hit a three pointer with 1:32 to make it close at 66-63. But Donohue made a layup at 1:07 for a five point lead, and after five fouls down the stretch by the Hawks, the Dutchmen wrapped it up with two free throws by Dzanko with five seconds left for the 70-63 final.
