"Score for Kristen & the Kids" raises funds for children's cancer

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Union College Athletics has announced a new fund raising promotional program to raise funds for patients of Ewing's Sarcoma. The program, entitled “Score for Kristen & the Kids,” will debut this weekend, Friday, January 7 and Saturday, January 8. The weekend features home games for women's ice hockey (Friday vs. Harvard at 3 p.m. and Saturday vs. Dartmouth at 3 p.m.), and men's ice hockey (Friday vs. St. Lawrence at 7 p.m. and Saturday vs. Clarkson at 7 p.m.).

Ewing's Sarcoma / Peripheral Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumors (PNET) of bone is a type of cancer usually found in children and young adults. Kristen Shinebarger is an active eight year old who was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma in November. She is the daughter of Shelly Shinebarger, the Director of Student Support Services at Union College.

“Kristen is a wonderful young lady and a part of our Union College community who is going through a difficult time with this challenging disease,” said Jim McLaughlin, Union College Director of Athletics. “This fund raising initiative will support not only Kristen, Shelly and their family, but also the children and families throughout the nation who endure the effects of this disease.”

During this fund raising initiative, funds will be raised by pledges toward each power play goal by the Dutchmen and Dutchwomen, from the January 7 games through the end of the seasons. Fans can pledge a specific dollar amount to each power play goal. Last season, from January through the end of the season, the teams combined to score 20 power play goals.

In addition, a donation box will be in the Messa Rink lobby for each of the remaining 18 combined regular season home games for the two hockey teams, plus possible playoff games. Fans may also donate by mail to the following address: Department of Athletics, Union College, 807 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12304. Checks would be made out to “Union College Athletics” with the memo field, “Score for Kristen & the Kids.”

Legere Restorations is the lead sponsor of this charity promotion, Ray Legere of Legere Restorations has pledged funds per each power play goal towards "Score for Kristen & the Kids."
