ALBANY, N.Y. - The two preeminent college hockey programs in the Capital Region, the Union College and RPI men's ice hockey teams, will join to help the 51st Center for Disability Services Telethon on Sunday, Jan. 30 at the Holiday Inn Albany on Wolf Road. The telethon will air on WXXA/Fox 23 from noon to 7 p.m.
“We are looking forward to helping with the event for such a worthy cause,” said Union head coach Nate Leaman. “Together with RPI we hope to use our friendly competition to gain new heights for the Center for Disability Services.”
“We are thrilled to help such an outstanding cause,” said Rensselaer head coach Seth Appert. “We hope the healthy rivalry between RPI and Union will promote more giving from our communities.”
The Dutchmen will work the phones from 5-6 p.m., while the Engineers will take the 6-7 p.m. shift. The teams will compete to see which squad takes more phone calls for pledges during their hour working the phones.
Last year, the telethon set a new donation record, raising $1.9 million for the Center for Disability Services.
The telethon raises funds to further the Center for Disability Services mission to enable and empower people, primarily those with disabilities, to lead healthy and enriched lives.
Donors who call in a pledge of $100 or more will be eligible to participate in a drawing for a pair of tickets to Super Bowl XLV. The winner of the drawing will be announced on the air between 6:30 p.m. and the end of the broadcast.
Pledges can be made by calling 518-459-7070.
