FAIRFAX, VA -- Two recent Union College graduates,
Jared Gourrier and
Peter Haviland-Eduah, have received the 2010 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports-Scholar Awards. The honors, presented by
Diverse Magazine, are awarded for outstanding academic and athletic achievement. Both Gourrier and Haviland-Eduah completed their Union football careers in the 2009 season.
Gourrier received his degree in American Studies in June. He played both quarterback and receiver during his Dutchman career, and had 37 catches for 478 yards and a TD last season. He served internships with the Habitat for Humanity and the Hamilton Hill Art Center, where he conducted workshops with activities with children in an after school program. Jared also served an internship with the NFL's New England Patriots for the Football Operations department, including work prior to their Super Bowl XLII appearance in 2008. Jared was the Senior Class President in 2009-10 and was a member of UNITAS, an advisory committee to the Union College President. The mission of UNITAS is to foster cooperation, community, and diversity among students, faculty, staff and alumni.
Jared was accepted into the Teach for America program, and will join the 2011 corps for that organization. This fall, he will be back on the gridiron, coaching both running backs and quarterbacks at his high school, McDonogh 35 in New Orleans, and will also work at the school throughout the year in preparation for the Teach for America program.
Haviland-Eduah was the Union College Student Body President in 2009-10. He majored in History and Africana Studies, and had 46 tackles for the ECAC and Liberty League Champion Dutchmen in 2009. Peter was
a member of Generation U, which is a committee with Alumni Relations that is responsible for reaching out to students and young alums to assist in fund raising efforts. He was a History Tutor for the Academic Opportunity Program, and a member of the Student Alumni Association. In the summer of 2008, Peter spent the summer serving an internship at the Kings County District Attorney's office in Brooklyn. In the Spring of 2009, Peter is serving an internship in Washington DC at the United States Senate Office of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand for the second straight summer, and he previously served as an intern at the Saratoga County District Attorney's Office. Peter was a member of the Delphic Honor Society at Union, for students who are thought to give the most to the Union community.
At the College's Annual Prize Day, Peter received the Albert Hill Recognition Award, presented to seniors who have held leadership positions and demonstrated exceptional commitment to enhancing the college community. His other Prize Day honor was the William F. Allen (1895) Essay Prize, presented to a senior in any department for the best essay.
