Three Union College hockey players have been nominated for consideration to participate in the 2010 Frozen Four Skill Challenge, which will take place during the NCAA Frozen Four Weekend at Ford Field in Detroit. Senior forwards
Mario Valery-Trabucco and
Jason Walters are the candidates for the Dutchmen, while senior defenseman
Jackie Koetteritz is the representative for the Dutchwomen.
To help determine the final 32 student-athletes who will participate in the skills challenge, the NCAA will incorporate a fan-voting element. Union fans can cast their votes for Trabucco, Walters and Koetteritz until Feb. 15 at
NCAA.com/FrozenFour. While the fan voting will aid in the selection process, the ultimate decisions will be made by the selection committee by the end of Feb. The final rosters will include male and female alternates.
Walters is making the most out of his senior season with a team-best 13 goals and team-high tying 28 points. His 15 assists and four power-play goals are tied for the team lead. No Union student-athlete had ever enjoyed a run like the one Walters had this season. The Renfrew, Ontario native produced a 15-game scoring streak (Nov. 14 - Jan. 30), producing 11 goals and 12 assists during the span. He was a plus-11 with three power-play goals and two game-winners during the stretch and was cashing in on 19.3 percent of his shots.
In his 25 games Valery-Trabucco has registered 12 goals, 16 assists and 28 points. He leads the team for assists, tied for first for points and is second for goals. His plus-16 rating ranks second, while his 104 shots are first. This season, Trabucco has registered a team-high nine multi-point games, including three games with three points.
A native of Breckenridge, Colo., the co-captain Koetteritz has scored three goals and one assist this season. Two of her goals this season were on the power play. Koetteritz is also four goals away from becoming the program's all-time goal-scorer for a defenseman.
