SCHENECTADY, NY -- Union men's hockey recorded its first loss in conference play Friday night at Messa Rink, as the Dutchman (13-5-5) surrendered to Harvard (5-10-2) with a 4-1 loss. Union now holds a 7-1-3 conference record, while the Crimson stand 5-5-2. Despite unloading a season-high 48 shots, Union saw its 10-game conference streak halted.
With its fifth ranked power-play unit on the ice, Union began the scoring with the first goal of the game.
Jason Walters scored his 13th goal of the season at 3:20 of the second period on a smooth assist from
Mike Schreiber -- his 14th assist of the year. Sophomore
Kelly Zajac picked up his sixth helper on the play.
The goal extended Walters' scoring streak to 14 games. The one-time slapshot came on the seventh shot of the power-play, as Union beat junior goaltender Ryan Carroll, who finished the game with a career-high 47 saves.
Sixteen of Union's 21 shots in the second period occurred during its power-play opportunities, as Union outshot Harvard, 21-6. Overall Union registered 23 shots off its power play, which was 1-8 on the evening.
Harvard found the back of the net twice in the second stanza. The first, netted by Freshman Conor Morrison at 5:33, came only minutes after Union opened the scoring
The game-winner came off the stick of sophomore Eric Kroshus at 12:07 of the second off a deflection from a shot from senior Alex Biega. The goal was his first game-winner of the season and the second goal of his career.
Harvard finished the game with a pair of empty net goals by freshman Danny Biega (18:53) and freshman Alex Fallstrom (19:36).
Carroll improved his record to 3-2-1 overall with his seventh career victory. At the other end freshman goaltender
Keith Kinkaid turned away 21 shots for his first ECAC Hockey loss (6-1-1). Overall, the Farmingville, NY native is 7-2-2.
