SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior midfielder Lincoln Field (Contoocook, NH) scored two goals and junior goalkeeper Alex Penny (Northport, NY) made key saves to preserve the victory and shutout as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute defeated Worcester State, 4-0 in the second game of the 2009 Union Classic Men's Soccer Tournament. The game was played at Union's College Park Field Friday night.
Senior forward Jabel Prom (Sandy Spring, MD) and sophomore forward Julian Coy (Bristow, VA) also scored for the Engineers, who had a 27-8 shot advantage for the night.
Field opened the scoring with an unassisted score at 26:39, as he cut into the middle and drove a low shot left of Lancer goalkeeper Evan Wilga (Dudley, MA). Field made it 2-0 at 53:51 on a penalty kick. At 77:21, Prom's first of the year came when he took a cross from Sean Fleury (Princeton, MA) and tapped it in inside the left post. Coy capped off the scoring when he took a pass from Zach Fane (Troy, NY) and deposited the ball around the left side of the keeper.
Although Penny made just four saves, two were outstanding stops for the Engineers. With 13:03 left in the first half he made a stunning save and later made a diving stop near the left post off a blast from David Gustafson (Webster, MA) with 40:09 remaining.
The Engineers face John Jay Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and Worcester State faces host Union at 6 p.m.
