Rios, Winchell Honored as Field Hockey Heads to Playoffs

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Union College field hockey players Sarah Rios and Lauren Winchell have each received Liberty League honors for games through November 1. Rios was named the Liberty League Co-Defensive Performer of the Week while Winchell was the Co-Rookie of the Week. This is the second honor for each player.

The Dutchwomen, 10-7 during the regular season, are the #4 seed in the upcoming Liberty League Championship Tournament. Union will play at #1 Skidmore Wednesday at 2 p.m. The winner of that game will face the winner of Wednesday's #3 St. Lawrence at #2 Hamilton game. The Championship Game will be at the highest remaining seed on Saturday, November 7.

Rios made 11 saves in Union's regular season finale, a 2-1 win at New Paltz. She has 44 saves in her last four games and it was her fourth game of 10 or more saves for Union, which plays at Skidmore in Wednesday's league playoff semifinal game. On the season, Rios has a 10-7 record with a 1.39 goals against average and a save percentage of .843.

Winchell scored the game winning goal with 7:37 left in regulation to give Union a 2-1 victory at New Paltz in the regular season finale. Winchell's fifth goal of the season game Union its 10th win, the fifth straight 10 win season for the Dutchwomen. Union continues play in the league playoffs Wednesday at Skidmore. Winchell has five goals for Union this year.
