Pride isn't something that the Union College men's lacrosse team limits to it performance on the field. The team is one of the most active programs in the country when it comes to lending a helping hand. If you remember their bone marrow efforts last year (click here) and their participation in the Student Athlete Advisory Committee's "Run, Ribs and Reggae" in May (click here). Well the team has been making an impact on campus and in the community.
The Dutchmen play a big role in the sustainability of the college campus. During move-in weekend, the lacrosse team roamed the parking lots and loading docks, collecting cardboard that could be recycled.
In 2008, the amount of cardboards recycled during move-in weekend was 2.8 tons. After the men's lax team set out on its mission, the recycled cardboards jumped to 13.5 tons. That's a 473 percent increase in one year.
Since the spring, Union College has been restoring the South Avenue Park in Schenectady, NY. In that time it has resealed and repainted the basketball court, repainted toys, laid bark chips around play equipment, and done general maintenance and upkeep.
The contribution of time and energy by Men’s lacrosse is invaluable to the preservation of the park. More than 30 players showed up, giving the community an area to enjoy some recreational time.
