SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men’s and women’s swimming and diving team opened its 2009-10 season each finishing second at the Union Relays on Saturday.
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s men’s and women’s team finished first while SUNY New Paltz’s women’s team finished third and Montclair State finished fourth. On the men’s side, Montclair State finished third and New Paltz finished fourth.
Freshman Brileigh Pinkney, who made her collegiate debut, teamed up with sophomore Kaleigh Ahern and senior Maria Prendergast to win the fifth event, the 300 yard breaststroke relay. The three turned in a time of 3:33.51 with Montclair State finishing second with a time of 3:36.58.
Union was also successful in the 15th eventh, the women’s 200 yard medley relay. Pinkney and Prendergast teamed up with junior Andrea Marois and senior Mary Kate Baumann to win the relay with a time of 1:54.42. New Paltz finished behind the Dutchwomen with a time of 1:56.05.
The third event, the women’s 300 yard backstroke relay, was a close race in the end. New Paltz took first with a time of 3:06.51 while the U.S. Coast Guard edged Union by 12 milliseconds.
On the men’s side, the team came close to finishing first in the fourth event, a 300 yard backstroke relay. Junior Brian Scarlett, sophomore Michael Mooney teamed up with freshman Matt Wahl to record a time of 2:47.47, just 79 seconds short from tying the U.S. Coast Guard’s time.
Union will return to the pool on Nov. 7 in an Intrasquad meet. The meet is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. at the Alumni Gym.
