Dutchwomen Announce 2015-16 Captains and Team Awards at Year-End Banquet

SCHENECTADY, NY - The 2014-15 Union College women's ice hockey team announced their team awards at the end-of-the-year banquet on Friday night.

The Dutchwomen finished 4-22-8 on the season, recording a school-record eight ties and the program's first ever win against Northeastern in seven meetings between the schools. Union also snapped a 29-game losing streak to Colgate with their 1-1 tie against the Raiders on January 31st.

Senior goaltender Shenae Lundberg was named the George Morrison MVP Award receipient for the second straight season. Lundberg was tremendous between the pipes throughout the year as she started in all 34 games. She finished the season with 1,110 saves and a .918 save percentage, both career-highs, to go along with a 2.95 goals-against average. Her 1,110 save rank second in school history and 6th in NCAA history in a single season. On December 2nd, Lundberg posted a career-high 59 saves in a 1-0 shutout victory at Northeastern, setting the NCAA Division I record for most saves in a shutout. That contest was the beginning of the month where Lundberg was named the ECAC's Goaltender of the Month. For the month, she led the nation in saves (161), wins (3) and shutouts (2). She finished her career as the program leader in wins (20), shutouts (6) and saves (3,023). She currently ranks 20th all-time in NCAA history in saves.

Senior captain Christine Valente was named both the Hana Yamashita Coaches Award and the Unsung Hero Award. This is the third straight year Valente was been rewarded with the Unsung Hero award. Valente played in 34 games for the fourth straight year, tying the program record with 136 games played. She ended the season with five goal and eight assists for 13 points and ranked first on the team with 87 shots on goal and 297 faceoff wins. The West Haven, CT moved into first place all-time with her 36th career assist in a 1-1 tie against #8-St. Lawrence on February 6th.

Freshman forward Erica Kelly was voted as the team's Rookie of the Year. Kelly appeared in 32 games, leading all rookies in goals (3) and points (5). She finished third on the squad with 181 faceoff wins. Kelly's first collegiate goal came in a contest at Harvard on November 1st. 

Junior defensemen Elizabeth Otten was selected as the team's Most Improved Player. Otten suited up in all but one game during her junior season, scoring her first two career-goals on the year. Her second goal of the season came in dramatic fashio as she fired home a shot with 1:12 remaining in regulation to force a 2-2 tie against Colgate on February 20th.

Freshman forward Nicole Russell received the Ashley Kilstein '08 Community Service Award. Russell potted two goals and dished out three assists for five points during the season. She added 34 shots on goal including a season-high eight at Clarkson on January 16th. Russell also blocked 20 shots on the year.

At the conclusion of the event, Coach Claudia Asano Barcomb announced that juniors Kathryn Tomaselli, Elizabeth Otten, Jessica Kaminsky and sophomore Alli Devins will serve as team captains for the upcoming 2015-16 season. Tomaselli played in all 34 games, leading the team with nine goals and 20 points. Kaminsky tied Tomaselli with 20 points on the season to go along with a team-high 14 assists despite missing five games due to an injury. Devins appeared in all but two games, registering 16 shots on goal and blocking 10 shots for the Dutchwomen.
