SCHENECTADY, NY -- Six distinguished individuals and an outstanding team will be inducted into the Union College Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, October 23. The ceremony will be held at College Park beginning at 4 p.m.
The Class of 2010 consists of
Tod Fobare '83, Julie Miller '84, John Parillo '57, Rich Pulver '95, Bill Scanlon and
Dorothy Scarpinato '80. The inductee for the Team of Distinction category is the
1966 Men's Lacrosse Team. These new inductees bring the total number of individual members in the Hall of Fame, which was first instituted in 2002, to 57. The Teams of Distinction now feature six squads, as the category was instituted in 2007.
Earlier in the day, the Union football team will host Salisbury at 12 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field. At 7 p.m. the Dutchmen hockey team will host the Rochester Institute of Technology at Messa Rink.

TOD FOBARE '83
Baseball, Ice Hockey
Played from 1979-80 through 1982-83…second all-time in career points with 167 points, was all-time leader until 1991…second in career assists with 102…two-time captain…ECAC First Team in 1982-83…ECAC Second Team and team MVP in 1981-82…key member of the program during a transitional period, (season prior to his arrival, Union was 5-21)… his freshman season Union won 12 games…was program's top offensive player on teams not deep in talent at that time, thus covered/checked more then others…played third base for three years…member of the Saranac Lake Athletic Hall of Fame.
JULIE MILLER '84
Basketball, Tennis
Four year starter for basketball and three year tennis player…35-15 career tennis record, including 32-11 in the regular season…won 1983 New York State Singles Championship, in 44 player field, still the best performance ever at states for a Union women's tennis player in history…finished fifth of 64 in states in 1982…team MVP in both years…was all-time career rebounding leader with 556, still ninth all-time 24 years later…held record for 10 years…scored 630 career points…named Most Improved Player in 1981-82…won ECAC Medal and Women's Commission “Athletic Promise Award.”
JOHN PARILLO '57
Cross Country, Track & Field
Was undefeated in a total of 13 dual and triangular cross country meets in 1955 and 1956…set new records in 1956 in meets at Union, Alfred, Colgate and Hamilton…won NYSSCC Championship in track in 1955, 1956 and 1957…competed vs. all levels…Eleventh in IC4A Championships held at Michigan State…set Union record in mile in '57…team captain for multiple seasons…Class Marshall…earned Botany Prize…”His speed, endurance and style were so outstanding that I can still visualize our team's young phenom now…over a half century later” said Frank R. Kiwus, 1954 track captain.
RICH PULVER '95
Track & Field
NCAA Division III National Champion in shot put in 1995…still holds Union record in that event at 56' 6 ¾”…won New York State Championship in shot put…Union's Most Valuable Player in 1994 and 1995 outdoor track & field seasons...won shot event at Brown with toss of 51'9”, was “...chagrined that the competition was not up to his level, hopefully at the States the men will be more up to his standard. It does not matter as he will annihilate them anyway”(from Concordius)….had career best (at that time) throw of 54' for first in a pre-states meet....dominated competition in pre-states tune-up, first at the University of Rochester.
BILL SCANLON
Men's Basketball Coach, Administrator
Recorded the most wins of any men's basketball coach in Union history, 315 wins from the 1973-74 season through the 1994-95 season…Led Union to 11 post-season men's basketball tournaments…New York State Coach of the Year in 1973-74 and 1982-83… served the athletic department as an Associate Athletic Director from 2000 to his retirement in 2008…also served as Director of Intramurals, Recreation and Physical Education and Head Men's & Women's Tennis Coach from 1996 through 1999…was a member of the NCAA Men's Basketball Rules Committee, 1988-94.
DOROTHY SCARPINATO '80
Basketball, Field Hockey, Softball
Played three years of softball and two years each of basketball and field hockey…was captain for field hockey and softball teams…Most Valuable Player of softball team in senior season of 1980…was the inaugural recipient of the Robert M. Ridings Award in 1980...received President's Award in 1980…was Vice President and then President of Block U Society…also was a student trainer for three years…was a leader in her sorority, Delta Gamma…later became an orthopedic surgeon…currently coaches young girls in basketball and softball.

1966 MEN'S LACROSSE
Team finished with a record of 10-1, the best won-lost men's lacrosse record at Union from the 1930's through 2000…Defeated Syracuse University, which came to Union with an 8-0 record at the time…Union ended the season with a win over RPI…Five members of this team received All-American accolades during their careers…Only one of the five future All-Americans had previous lacrosse experience in high school competition.
