Five Dutchwomen receive IWLCA regional honors

Lizzy Moran caps off her senior year on the regional all star team.
SCHENECTADY, NY -- Five members of the Union College women's lacrosse team were named to the 2010 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-Regional teams. These athletes are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-American teams. Named to the Empire Region First Team were Kristin Joyce, Liz Moran and Cat Ruggiero, while Kat Egizi and Melissa Hine received Second Team honors. 

These athletes are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-American teams, which are scheduled to be announced by May 28.

Union finished the 2010 season with a record of 11-7, with three losses to then-#1 ranked teams, and all seven losses came against top 20 opponents.


Kristin Joyce
 
1 Kristin Joyce - First Team Attack
Joyce had 72 goals and eight assists for 80 points. She was a four time Liberty League Performer of the Week and a two time womenslacrosse.com weekly honoree. She led the league in goals (by 15), and points and was one of only two players in the league with four game winning goals. Joyce also led the league in shots (by 14). She had at least one goal in every game, and had six games with five or more goals. She scored seven goals each against nationally ranked teams Babson and Middlebury, and had six tallies vs. RPI, St. Lawrence and William Smith in league games. She ranked 25th in NCAA Div. III in goals per game. Her 191 career goal total is second all time at Union, and she also ranks second in career points with 225.

8 Liz Moran - First Team Defense
Moran had 36 ground balls, 15 draw controls and 12 caused turnovers. She was second on the team in ground balls and was a member of a defense that has the nation's best goals against average.

Cat Ruggiero
 
47 Cat Ruggiero - First Team Goalkeeper
Ruggiero was 11-7 with a 7.07 goals against average and a .587 save percentage. She was second in the nation in NCAA Division III save percentage and fifth in goals against average. She was a three time Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week. Ruggiero had allowed four or less goals in seven games, posted a shutout vs. RPI, and allowed one goal in wins vs. Rochester and Clarkson. She did not allowed double digit goals in 12 games and made 22 saves in one goal OT loss at #1 Salisbury.

Kat Egizi
 
23 Kat Egizi - Second Team Defense
Egizi was a key starter who had another excellent season after her fine rookie campaign. She recorded a team best 47 ground balls, 33 draw controls and 24 caused turnovers. She was a member of a defense that had the nation's fifth ranked goals against average.

Melissa Hine
 
10 Melissa Hine - Second Team Midfield
Hine had 16 goals and 57 assists for 73 points. She ranked second in NCAA Division III in assists and earned a Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week honor. She dished out a Union individual season best nine assists in the win at William Smith and had seven assists at Rochester and six vs. nationally ranked Cortland. She had four ground balls vs. Clarkson and four draw controls against Rochester.
