Dutchwomen softball team claims 2010 ECAC Upstate title

SCHENECTADY
, NY – The Union College softball won all three games in the 2010 ECAC Division III Upstate Championship, winning the title for the fourth-consecutive season with a 4-2 victory against St. John Fisher. Seniors Tiffany Ippoliti and Ashley Kovack were named the tournament's most outstanding players. Ippoliti pitched 15 innings in three games, whiffing 13 and posting a 1.40 ERA. Kovack went 5-for-9 with three home runs, including two in the title bout.
 
The Dutchwomen, who also won the Liberty League Championship, finish the season with a 32-8  record, tying the school record for wins. St. John Fisher stands at 27-20.

Ippoliti, the Liberty League pitcher of the year, threw six innings and struck out two batters for her 17th win of the season. Senior Ginni Sack closed out the game, retiring three-straight batters.
 
Kovack got things started in the bottom of the first with her fourth home run of the season. The solo shot came with two outs in the inning.
 
Fisher responded an inning later when freshman Emily Britzzalaro singled through the middle to score junior Jamie Harmon, who put the Cardinals into the championship game with a game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh of the semifinal against Elmira.
 
With the score even at 1-1, junior Becky Gronczniak put the Dutchwomen up for good with a single to score senior Diana Polli.
 
The Dutchwomen established a three-run lead through five innings when sophomore Lauren Hoffman registered an RBI single in the fourth and Kovack, in the fifth, homered for the second time.
 
The Cardinals last push came in the top of the seventh with an RBI by junior Lauren O'Brien on a fielder's choice.
