Dutchwomen softball splits doubleheader with Staten Island

Callee Heywood went 4-for-8 on the day with two RBIs and two runs scored

, NY – After dropping the first game 8-5, the Union College softball team knocked off State Island (12-8), 6-1, during game two of a doubleheader at Alexander Field. Sophomore second baseman Callee Heywood led the Dutchwomen (14-6) in the second outing, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
 
Senior ace Tiffany Ippoliti earned the victory in a four-strikeout, four-hit performance for her seventh victory (7-2) of the season.
 
Freshman third baseman Hannah Fandl and senior leftfielder Diana Polli also registered multi-hit games. Fandl was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Polli was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI.
 
The Dutchwomen established a 2-1 lead in the first thanks to back-to-back doubles by sophomore shortstop Lauren Hoffman and Heywood, who was brought home on a sacrifice fly by freshman DP Samantha Chevalier.
 
After a solo homerun by junior catcher Alexandra King in the third inning, Union added to its lead with a pair of runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth.
 
During the first game, three Dutchwomen registered three-hit performances. Hoffman went 3-for-5, while sophomore catcher Nina Cervini and Chevalier both went 3-for-4.
 
The Dolphins used a big start with a pair of runs in the first, three in the second and three in the third to build an 8-0 lead before the Dutchwomen mounted a five-run fourth inning. Junior outfielder Becky Gronczniak got the scoring started with an RBI double. She later scored on a passed ball. Senior third baseman Ashley Kovac produced an RBI in the inning along with Chevalier, who doubled. Junior right fielder Aeriele Noll concluded the scoring with an RBI single to right.
 
Staten Island's Danielle Ponsiglione earned the victory, going the distance and whiffing four batters. She improved to 9-2. Senior pitcher Ginni Sack was credited with the loss, moving her record to 7-4.
 
The Dutchwomen return to action on Sunday, April 18 with a noon doubleheader against Liberty League foe Rochester at Alexander Field.
