SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior pitcher Tiffany Ippoliti pitched a complete five inning perfect game to lead Union to a 12-0 softball win and a sweep over Mount Saint Mary at Alexander Field Wednesday afternoon. The Dutchwomen (9-3) won the opener, 5-4 in eight innings, while the Blue Knights fell to 8-6.

Ippoliti (2-1) struck out seven of the 15 batters she faced, and Union opened up a 4-0 lead with eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to create the "eight run rule." The Blue Knights went down in order in the fifth and thus Ippoliti recorded her first career perfect game and first career no-hitter in her collegiate career. The no-hitter was preserved in the top of the fifth when left fielder Becky Gronczniak made a diving catch on a sinking liner.

It was the first Union softball no-hitter since Jackie Coffey pitched a six inning gem on March 31, 2006. The game was also against Mount Saint Mary at Alexander Field on the Union campus.

An RBI single to right center by Erika Hillenbrand plated the winning run in the bottom of the eighth in the first contest. The Dutchwomen took a 2-0 lead in the third on consecutive RBI doubles by Nina Cervini and Aeriele Noll. After a run in the top of the fourth, the Blue Knights took a 3-2 lead in the fifth with an RBI by Caitlin Maynes and a run coming in on an error. Union tied it in the third on a fielder's choice by Noll. In the top of the eighth, Sarah Johnson had an RBI single for a 4-3 Blue Knight lead. But in the bottom of the stanza, Lauren Hoffman posted an RBI single to tie it and then with two outs, Hillenbrand's single to right center plated Hoffman and provided the Union victory.

Ginni Sack went the route and allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out three, and she is now 6-2. Haynes took the defeat, giving up nine hits and four earned runs. Cervini and Diana Polli had two hits each for the Dutchwomen, while Johnson had two hits and two RBIs for Mount Saint Mary.

Union scored two runs in both the first and third innings, then blew the game open in the fourth. The Dutchwomen sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs on 10 hits and two errors. Callee Heywood had three htis and two RBIs and Polli added three hits. Samantha Chevalier hit her first career homer in the big inning. Kerry Ulmer took the loss in four innings of work.

Union returns home Saturday to host SUNY Plattsburgh at 1 p.m.
