CANTON, NY -- The Union College men's basketball team, seeded #4, will face #1 seed and host St. Lawrence University Friday night in a Liberty League Championship Semifinal Game at Burkman Gymnasium. The #2 seed Skidmore will face #3 Hobart in the other semifinal Friday at 6 p.m.
Friday's winners will play for the Liberty League Championship Saturday at 3 p.m. The winner receives the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Playoffs, and the tourney field will be announced on Monday, March 1.
Union is led by senior guard
Joey Lokitis, who is scoring at an average of 16.0 points with 5.7 rebounds. A unanimous Liberty League First Team selection, Lokitis is hot entering the tournament with an average of 21.0 points per game in his last five contests. He received five league weekly guard honors, the most of any guard in the league. Lokitis recently scored his 1,000th career point. He scored 20 in Union's 61-60 home win over the Saints on January 22, and has 22 last Saturday in the 89-73 loss in the regular season finale at St. Lawrence.
Drew Goldstein scored 13 points with six assists in the home win over the Saints, and is averaging 9.5 points per game with 62 assists.
Keven Donohue has been strong in the second half of his freshman season, and scored 24 points in last week's game in Canton. He has averaged 16.4 points per game since January 29.
Matt Covucci, who joined Goldstein on the league's honorable mention team, has a team high 7.2 rebounding average.
St. Lawrence features the Liberty League Player of the Year, Josh Sharlow. He is the Saints' first league player of the year since 1998, and he scored his 1,000th career point in last week's win over the Dutchmen. He is averaging 11.9 points per game and has 104 assists. Garrett Sharlow has a 12. 8 scoring average with a 6.6 rebounding clip, and Ralph Temgoua joined both players on the all star team. Temgoua is avearging 11.9 points and 6.5 rebounds for the Saints. He had a game high 12 rebounds in the game in Schenectady, and pulled down a game high 11 boards in last week's home win.
The Saints are making their fifth straight appearance in the tournament, and last year lost at RPI in the title game. Their last title was in 2007. Union is back in the tourney for the first time since 2007, and won the title in 2006.
