Keven Donohue scored 24 points and senior guard
Joey Lokitis tallied 22 points but the Union men's basketball squad lost at St. Lawrence, 89-73 Saturday at Burkman Gym. The Saints (14-11 overall) improved to 10-4 in the league and secured the host spot in next weekend's Liberty League Championship Tournament.
Despite the loss, the Dutchmen secured a tournament berth when Clarkson lost at home to Skidmore, 71-57. Union is the #4 seed with an 8-6 league record (12-12 overall), and will face the host Saints next Friday in a semifinal matchup. Hobart will meet Skidmore (both 9-5 in league play) in the other contest.
Andy Hoercher led St. Lawrence with 23 points, and four other Saints hit for double figures. Ralph Temgoua had a double double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Josh Sharlow added 16 points. Garrett Sharlow scored 11 and Nick Meunier added 10.
Rusmir Dzanko scored 14 for the Dutchmen and
Matt Covucci had 10 points. Covucci and Donohue led the Dutchmen with seven rebounds each.
St. Lawrence shot 52% for the night while Union had a 44% clip from the floor. The Dutchmen shot 92% from the line, making 11 of 12 from the charity stripe.
In the first half, the Saints led by one at 11-10 with 15;20 left, then went on a 21-10 run in the next 6:58 for a 12 point advantage. The Dutchmen cut it to seven, 45-38, by halftime. A three pointer by Donohue with 18:08 left in the second half had Union again within seven points at 50-43. But in the next seven minutes and 29 seconds, the Saints had a run of 16-6 for a 17 point lead (68-51). The Saints led 79-59 with 7:14 left after consecutive layups by Hoercher, but Lokitis hit three three pointers during an 11-2 run to make it an 11 point game at 81-70 with 4:26 left. Three pointers by Sharlow and Hoercher in the next 2:15 opened it up for the Saints, who never trailed by less than 14 the rest of the contest.
Union and St. Lawrence split the season series, with each home team winning on campus. Union is returning to the tournament for the first time since 2007, while the Saints lost in last year's title game at home to RPI.
