SCHENECTADY, NY -- Kelsey Powers scored with 1:14 remaining in regulation to lift the Union College field hockey team to a 1-0 win over SUNY Oneonta in the Dutchwomen's home opener Wednesday at Frank Bailey Field. Union improved to 1-1 on the young season while the Red Dragons fell to 0-4.
Powers took a pass off a corner from
Andrea Meyers at 68:46 and blasted a low drive past Oneonta goaltender Leslie Dauphinais (Harpursville, NY). The Red Dragon netminder was sharp in keeping the Dutchwomen off the board to that point, as she finished with 18 saves while her Union counterpart,
Sarah Rios, made five stops.
Rios preserved the shutout and win in the final seconds. She made a save off the stick of Ainsley Stoll (Williamsville, NY) with one second left, and a corner was called. A flurry after the corner, which continues after time expired, could not produce the tying tally.
With 18:17 left in regulation, Dauphinais made a diving stop to her right off the shot by Union's
Allie Ryan. With 10:33 left to play in the second half, Rios came up with a low save on a strong drive from 20 yards out by Oneonta's Stoll.
Union had a 13-6 advantage in corners on the day.
The Dutchwomen play at WPI Saturday at 2 p.m.
