Ginni Sack and senior first baseman
Megan Kaknis have been named to the 2009 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Softball Team. The team is selected by CoSIDA (the College Sports Information Directors of America). Sack was named to the First Team and will now go on to the national ballot for All-American consideration. Kaknis was named to the Third Team.
Sack, a junior pitcher who carries a 3.50 in Neuroscience, will now will be under consideration for Academic
All-American honors. She is the first softball player to receive First Team
All-District honors since Erika Eisenhut and Julie Gawronski were honored in 2006. Kaknis has a 3.44 GPA in Biology.
Sack was 13-3 with an ERA of 0.94 ERA with 67 strikeouts. She is now third all time in career wins at Union with 48. She had seven shutouts and did not allow an earned run in 12 appearances this season. She had a one hitter vs. Mount St. Mary, and allowed five or less hits in 11 of her games. She struck out nine vs. Chicago and eight vs. Alfred (in the ECAC tourney), and did not allow a run vs. nationally ranked Wisconsin Whitewater. She had been named to the Liberty League All Star Team and also received a league Pitcher of the Week honor.
Kaknis batted .509 with 13 doubles, eight home runs, 43 RBIs, and had a slugging percentage of .889. She finished her Union career as the all time home run leader with 33. She led the Liberty League in batting average, RBIs and was second in total bases and third in doubles while being tied for third in home runs. She ranked 15th in NCAA batting and 18th in slugging and hit safely in 31 of the 37 games. She ended her career with a 12 game hitting streak and received Liberty League All Star honors while also being named a league Player of the Week during the season.
Union finished 31-6 and won a third straight ECAC Division III Upstate Championship.
