SALEM, VA -- Three members of the Union College football team have been selected to play in the 2009 Division III Senior Football Classic Saturday. The game, featuring North and South squads, will take place at 2 p.m. on Sat., December 5 at Salem Stadium, the home of the NCAA Div. III National Championship Game.
Seniors
Colin Berry,
Tim Furcillo and
John Peters will represent Union in this year's game. The game features 90 players who represent 238 Division III football programs from around the nation.
Berry, Furcillo and Peters all were selected to the Liberty League All Star First Team. Berry and Furcillo, starters at guard and center respectively, helped Union allow just nine sacks through the first nine games. Union was first in the league in total offense and second in the league in passing. Peters is a national finalist for the Gagliardi Trophy (presented to the outstanding football player in NCAA Division III who exhibits excellence in athletics, academics and community service). He was also named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America team and had 121 tackles in the 2009 season.
Union, the 2009 ECAC North Atlantic Bowl Champions, finished 8-3 and posted a remarkable 28th consecutive non-losing season. The Dutchmen posted an eight-win season for the ninth time in Head Coach John Audino's 18 seasons.
