Rochester holds on for 63-57 win over Dutchwomen

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Sophomore forward/center Jodie Luther (Gibsonia, PA) had team highs of 12 points and nine rebounds and sophomore forward Kate Agan (Elmira, NY) scored 10 points with seven boards as the University of Rochester defeated Union College, 63-57 in a non-league basketball game at the Viniar Athletic Center Friday night.

Sophomore forward/center Madeline Korber (Glastonbury, CT) added eight rebounds with eight points for Rochester. The Yellowjackets improved to 6-2 on the season while the Dutchwomen fell to 1-4. Rochester had a 47-31 rebounding advantage to offset 28 turnovers, while blocking eight Union shot attempts. The Dutchwomen were held to 35% shooting by Rochester, which shot 46%. Union had 13 steals.

Union was led by senior tri-captain Megan Clark, who posted her second consecutive double-double. She finished with game highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds, The 21 point total was her career high. She made seven of her 12 shots from the floor and also converted seven of her eight free throw attempts. Lauren McCormick scord 14 points with three steals and six reboudns while Leah Pepe also had three steals to go along with eight points.

With the game tied at 21-21 with 5:17 left in the first half, the Yellowjackets went on a 9-4 run to enter the break with a 30-25 lead. Union was within two at 37-35 after two free throws by McCormick with 4:33 gone in the second half. But the Yellowjackets took a 48-37 lead with 9:59 left. Freshman Kristyn Wright (Rocky Hill, CT) scored five points in the 11-2 run in a span of 5:28. The largest lead for Rochester was at 12 at 53-41 with 6:48 left. But the Dutchwomen went on a late run to get back in it. It was 59-57 after two free throws by Hage with 23 seconds remaining, and the 16-6 run in 6:25 featured five points by Clark and five by Pepe. But after a Union foul, Melissa Alwardt (Greece, NY) made both free throws with 21 seconds left for a four point UR lead and the Dutchwomen could not get any closer.

Union plays a non-league contest at Western New England Saturday while Rochester is idle until a January 5 home game vs. Medaille.
