SCHENECTADY, NY -- Junior
Lauren McCormick scored a team high 16 points with seven rebounds and
Leah Pepe added 11 points with three assists but the Union women's basketball team lost to Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 65-57 Sunday afternoon at the Viniar Athletic Center. The Dutchwomen, playing their home opener, fell to 0-2 on the young season, while the Engineers improved to 3-2.
Rachel Titcomb had eight points and
Shayla Madden and
Lindsay Hage scored seven each. Madden also had a game high four steals.
Junior guard Elle Fontaine (Franklin, MA) scored a game best 26 points and had seven rebounds, while Lauren Hannmann (East Greenbush, NY) led the Engineers with a game high eight rebounds. Caitlin O'Connor (New Hampton, NH) added 14 points for WPI, which shot 37% for the contest but forced 26 Union turnovers.
WPI had a 36-33 rebounding advantage on the game. Union shot 43% for the day and forced 20 turnovers.
The Engineers led 34-33 at halftime, but Union took its first lead of the second half when a Pepe free throw made it 38-37 with 17:31 left in the second. Union had a three point lead at 47-44 with 8:02 left on a jumper by Titcomb. But WPI knotted it at 47-47 at 705 to start a 15-3 run that made it 59-50 WPI with 2:24 left. O'Connor had six points in that run.
Union is idle until Saturday, December 5, when the Dutchwomen play a 1 p.m. game at Middlebury. WPI opens NEWMAC league play Wednesday at home against Smith at 7 p.m.
